For most Netflix users in 2026, NordVPN is our top VPN choice because NordLynx adds relatively little overhead, the network gives you plenty of regional endpoints to test, and our latest PPG measurements showed strong nearby throughput and stable packet delivery. ExpressVPN is particularly easy to use across streaming devices, while Surfshark is a strong option for households streaming Netflix on many devices. Netflix performance depends on more than raw VPN speed: the VPN exit IP, regional routing, DNS behavior, Netflix Open Connect delivery path, device capabilities, and the exact Netflix error code can all determine whether playback works properly.
Netflix does not deliver video like a normal website. It operates its own content-delivery network, Netflix Open Connect, and works directly with internet providers to place video content closer to viewers. Popular titles can be served from Open Connect Appliances inside an ISP’s own network or through direct peering with Netflix.
A VPN changes that delivery path. Instead of reaching Netflix through your normal ISP route, traffic first enters the VPN tunnel and exits through the provider’s server. Netflix then sees the VPN exit network rather than your normal residential connection.
Device → ISP → Netflix Open Connect / peering → video stream
With VPN:
Device → ISP → VPN server → Netflix delivery network → video stream
That extra route can affect startup time, sustained throughput, apparent region, and whether Netflix identifies the connection as a VPN or proxy.
Best VPNs for Netflix
- NordVPN — Best overall for Netflix, with NordLynx and plenty of regional routes to test.
- ExpressVPN — Best for simple Netflix setup across laptops, phones, and streaming devices.
- Surfshark — Best for households streaming Netflix on many devices.
- CyberGhost VPN — Best for beginners who prefer straightforward streaming-oriented apps.
- Proton VPN — Best privacy-focused option with strong standard WireGuard performance.
What Matters for a Netflix VPN
Netflix has different requirements from gaming or ordinary web browsing. The most important technical factors are:
- Sustained throughput: Netflix needs consistent bandwidth rather than a brief speed-test peak.
- Exit-IP reputation: Netflix can identify some VPN or proxy connections and return a proxy error.
- Regional routing: a nearby VPN server can still have a poor route toward Netflix infrastructure.
- DNS consistency: DNS, public IP, and the intended VPN region should not create contradictory network behavior.
- Protocol efficiency: NordLynx, WireGuard, and Lightway reduce unnecessary tunnel overhead.
- Device support: Netflix may be watched through Windows, macOS, iPhone, Android, Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, consoles, and smart TVs.
- Easy endpoint switching: one VPN server can behave differently from another in the same country.
These measurements are useful for evaluating the underlying VPN tunnel, but they are not direct Netflix catalog or playback tests. A strong speed result does not by itself prove that a specific Netflix library will work. See our complete VPN Testing Results.

| VPN | Best For | Protocol | PPG Lab Signal |
|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | Overall Netflix use | NordLynx | 93.7% SE / 93.5% DE / 83.1% UK |
| ExpressVPN | Simple device setup | Lightway | 95.3% SE / 93.2% DE |
| Surfshark | Many devices | WireGuard | 95.1% SE / 83.8% UK |
| CyberGhost | Beginners | WireGuard | 95.5% SE / 95.4% DE |
| Proton VPN | Privacy + Netflix | WireGuard | 95.2% SE / 95.0% DE |
1. NordVPN — Best Overall VPN for Netflix

NordVPN is our first choice because NordLynx keeps tunnel overhead low while the network gives you multiple regional endpoints to test when a particular path performs poorly.
That flexibility matters for Netflix because the VPN server is not the final video source. After leaving NordVPN’s network, traffic still needs to reach Netflix’s Open Connect infrastructure. Two VPN servers in the same country can therefore produce different startup times or sustained throughput even when their geographic distance looks similar.
Our latest NordVPN lab test retained 93.7% of baseline download speed in Sweden, 93.5% in Germany, and 83.1% in the UK. All five tested regions recorded 0% packet loss.
Long-distance performance fell much more sharply: US East retained 23.1% and Singapore 11.7% of our Swedish baseline. That does not automatically make those routes unsuitable for Netflix because Netflix’s own 4K recommendation is only 15 Mbps, but it shows the network cost of routing video through a distant region.
2. ExpressVPN — Best for Simple Netflix Setup

ExpressVPN is a good fit if Netflix is used across laptops, phones, tablets, and TV devices and you prefer a simple connection workflow. Lightway is the protocol we would normally start with for streaming because there is little benefit in adding unnecessary tunnel overhead to sustained video traffic.
Our latest ExpressVPN test used WireGuard rather than Lightway. Sweden retained 95.3% of baseline throughput and Germany 93.2%, but the UK dropped to 50.1%.
That UK result is useful for Netflix troubleshooting. If one regional path performs badly, do not assume the entire VPN service is slow. A different exit endpoint can change both the VPN-to-Netflix route and the public IP Netflix sees.
3. Surfshark — Best for Netflix on Many Devices

Surfshark is particularly useful in a household where Netflix runs on phones, tablets, laptops, TVs, and other devices because it allows unlimited simultaneous VPN connections.
For Netflix, use a normal WireGuard connection rather than adding multi-hop routing. Video streaming benefits from a short, stable path with sufficient sustained throughput.
Our Surfshark test retained 95.1% of baseline speed in Sweden and 83.8% in the UK, with 0% packet loss in all five regions. Germany was noticeably weaker at 63.0%.
4. CyberGhost VPN — Best Netflix VPN for Beginners

CyberGhost is a good choice for users who want straightforward apps and do not want to spend much time experimenting with protocol settings.
Its latest PPG lab result was particularly strong in nearby Europe. CyberGhost retained 95.5% of baseline speed in Sweden and 95.4% in Germany, while the UK retained 79.9%.
Every tested region also recorded 0% packet loss and 0 detected stability spikes. Those figures are useful evidence for sustained video transport, although they do not prove access to a particular Netflix catalog.
5. Proton VPN — Best Privacy-Focused VPN for Netflix

Proton VPN is the strongest fit here if privacy is important alongside Netflix use. For video streaming, use a normal single-hop WireGuard endpoint rather than Secure Core.
Secure Core deliberately sends traffic through an additional VPN location. That can be useful for specific privacy scenarios, but it adds network distance without helping Netflix video delivery.
Our Proton VPN test retained 95.2% of baseline throughput in Sweden and 95.0% in Germany, with 0% packet loss and 0 detected latency spikes across all five test regions.
How Netflix Open Connect Changes VPN Streaming
Netflix operates a purpose-built CDN called Open Connect. Instead of serving every video from a distant central data center, Netflix works with internet providers to localize video traffic.
Open Connect has two important delivery models:
- Embedded Open Connect Appliances: Netflix caching servers can be installed directly inside participating ISP networks.
- Settlement-free interconnection: ISPs can peer directly with Netflix at internet exchanges or private interconnections.
Netflix says it works with more than a thousand ISPs to localize substantial amounts of traffic. Embedded appliances can keep popular video traffic inside the ISP instead of repeatedly crossing external transit networks.
Home → ISP → embedded/local Open Connect → stream
Connecting through a VPN can move traffic away from that direct ISP-to-Netflix path. The VPN may still be very fast, but the route from its exit server to Netflix’s delivery infrastructure can be longer or less efficient.
Netflix Open Connect Appliance Technical Details
Netflix’s current storage-class Open Connect Appliances are 2U servers designed to store and deliver large quantities of video efficiently.
| OCA Component | Current Specification |
|---|---|
| Raw storage | Up to 120 TB |
| Operational throughput | Approximately 200 Gbps |
| Network connectivity | Up to 2 × 100 Gbps |
| Form factor | 2U |
The practical consequence for VPN users is simple: your normal ISP may already have an extremely efficient Netflix delivery path. A VPN should therefore be judged by the complete route to Netflix, not merely the distance to the VPN server.
How Fast Does a VPN Need to Be for Netflix?
Netflix’s own bandwidth requirements are relatively modest compared with modern broadband connections.
| Netflix Quality | Resolution | Recommended Speed |
|---|---|---|
| HD | 720p | 3 Mbps+ |
| Full HD | 1080p | 5 Mbps+ |
| Ultra HD | 4K | 15 Mbps+ |
This changes how PPG speed results should be interpreted. A VPN does not need to retain 90% of a 100 Mbps connection to stream Netflix in 4K. A stable 25 Mbps route can still exceed Netflix’s 15 Mbps recommendation.
For Netflix, stable throughput, route quality, and the ability to sustain the stream are often more useful than chasing the highest benchmark percentage.
Why Netflix Starts Blurry and Then Switches to HD or 4K
Netflix adapts video quality to the connection. The stream can begin at a lower bitrate while Netflix evaluates available throughput and then move to a higher-quality encode.
A few seconds of lower resolution at startup is therefore different from persistent quality loss.
Usually normal
- Stream starts slightly soft
- Quality improves after several seconds
- 1080p/4K then remains stable
Worth troubleshooting
- Quality repeatedly drops
- Buffering interrupts playback
- 4K never appears despite compatible plan/device
If quality repeatedly falls, compare another VPN endpoint and test the same title without the VPN before changing unrelated Netflix settings.
Netflix VPN Error Codes
Do not treat every Netflix error as a VPN block. The code usually tells you which part of the Netflix connection needs attention.
| Error | Meaning | First Check |
|---|---|---|
| E106 | Netflix detects a VPN or proxy connection | VPN/proxy state and apparent region |
| E121 | VPN/proxy used with an ad-supported Netflix experience | Disconnect VPN; this Netflix experience does not support it |
| NW-2-5 | Device took too long to connect to Netflix | Internet, router, Wi-Fi, DNS, or device connectivity |
Netflix Error E106: VPN or Proxy Detected
Netflix associates E106 with the message that you appear to be using a VPN or proxy.
If you are using an ad-free Netflix plan and see E106, check the connection systematically:
- Confirm that the VPN is actually connected.
- Open Fast.com on the same network.
- Select Show more info.
- Check the client location Netflix sees.
- Reconnect to another VPN endpoint in the same intended region.
- Restart the Netflix app or browser session.
- If the error persists, test with the VPN disconnected.
Also check antivirus or security suites. Some include their own VPN component that can remain active even after your main VPN application has been disconnected.
Netflix Error E121: Ad-Supported Netflix and VPNs
E121 is more specific than a normal proxy error. Netflix says this error can appear when an ad-supported Netflix experience is being accessed through a VPN or proxy.
Changing from one NordVPN, ExpressVPN, or Surfshark server to another is therefore not the correct fix. Netflix currently does not support VPN use with its ad-supported experience.
Netflix Error NW-2-5 Is Usually a Network Problem
Netflix defines NW-2-5 as a connection timeout: the streaming device took too long to reach Netflix.
That is different from E106. NW-2-5 does not by itself mean Netflix has detected your VPN.
Check:
- Whether other apps on the device can reach the internet
- Wi-Fi signal quality
- Router/modem connectivity
- Custom DNS settings
- Proxy configuration
- Whether the VPN itself has internet access
On a smart TV or console, test Netflix without the VPN first. If NW-2-5 remains, troubleshoot the device or home network rather than cycling VPN endpoints.
Why Fast.com Is Useful for Netflix VPN Testing
Fast.com is operated by Netflix, which makes it particularly useful for checking the path your current connection has toward Netflix infrastructure.
A good Netflix VPN test is:
- Run Fast.com without the VPN.
- Record the result.
- Connect to the VPN region you intend to use.
- Run Fast.com again.
- Open Show more info and check the client region.
- Start Netflix and watch whether quality stabilizes.
Do not expect the Fast.com number to match an Ookla test against a local server. The two tests may take different network paths and answer different questions.
Why Netflix 4K Can Fail Even When the VPN Is Fast Enough
A connection above 15 Mbps does not guarantee 4K. Netflix also requires a compatible plan, playback setting, device, browser or app, and display chain.
On Windows, for example, Netflix’s 4K requirements include compatible software and hardware. A setup can have a 500 Mbps VPN connection and still play below 4K because the limitation is the browser, codec support, GPU, display, or HDCP chain rather than network speed.
Netflix VPN on Smart TV, Apple TV, Fire TV, and Game Consoles
Fire TV and Android TV
A native VPN app is normally the cleanest setup where the provider supports the device. Connect the VPN first, then restart Netflix so the app establishes a fresh session over the new network path.
Apple TV
Use a native VPN app where available. Otherwise, router-level VPN routing may be an option. Avoid routing every household device through a distant VPN region if only Apple TV needs that route.
Smart TVs Without VPN Apps
Router-level VPN configuration or a provider-supported DNS solution may be required. Remember that Smart DNS changes DNS/routing behavior but does not provide the same encrypted tunnel as a normal VPN.
PlayStation and Xbox
Consoles generally need router-level VPN routing or a shared connection. If Netflix produces NW-2-5 after changing router or DNS settings, return the console to a known-good network configuration before diagnosing Netflix itself.
DNS and Netflix VPN Problems
DNS determines how Netflix hostnames are resolved, but it should not be treated as a universal Netflix-unblocking switch.
If Netflix stops working after you combine a VPN with manual DNS, a filtering resolver, or Smart DNS, remove one variable at a time:
- Return the device to automatic/default DNS.
- Test Netflix without the VPN.
- Reconnect the VPN.
- Retest Netflix.
- Only then add custom DNS back if you still need it.
Netflix VPN Troubleshooting
E106 VPN/Proxy Error
Check the active VPN, verify the apparent region with Fast.com, then test another endpoint in the same country.
E121
The ad-supported Netflix experience does not support VPN connections. Disconnect the VPN.
NW-2-5
Check internet access, Wi-Fi, router, DNS, and device connectivity. This is not automatically a VPN-detection error.
Netflix Keeps Buffering
Run Fast.com, use a closer VPN endpoint, and compare the same title without the VPN.
Netflix Stays at Low Resolution
Check sustained bandwidth, Netflix playback settings, plan limits, and device/browser 4K capabilities.
One VPN Server Is Slow
Try another endpoint in the same region. Different exits can have different transit paths toward Netflix Open Connect.
What a VPN Cannot Fix on Netflix
- A Netflix plan without 4K: VPN bandwidth cannot override account resolution limits.
- Unsupported 4K hardware: display, browser, codec, GPU, or HDCP requirements still apply.
- Weak Wi-Fi: poor connectivity between the TV and router occurs before the VPN path.
- Netflix service outages: changing VPN servers cannot repair Netflix infrastructure.
- E121 on an ad-supported experience: Netflix does not support VPN use in that configuration.
- VPN restrictions on Netflix live events: disconnect the VPN.

Final Thoughts — Best VPN for Netflix
NordVPN is our top overall Netflix choice because NordLynx keeps the tunnel efficient and its server network gives you multiple routes to test. ExpressVPN is particularly simple across streaming devices, Surfshark is excellent for large households, CyberGhost offers strong nearby performance with straightforward apps, and Proton VPN combines privacy with very stable WireGuard results.
For Netflix, do not focus only on a VPN’s maximum download speed. The complete streaming path matters: VPN exit IP → regional transit → Netflix Open Connect → adaptive bitrate → device playback capabilities.
When Netflix fails, start with the exact symptom. E106 points toward VPN/proxy detection, E121 is tied to ad-supported Netflix, NW-2-5 is usually a connectivity timeout, and persistent low resolution can be caused by bandwidth, playback settings, browser support, codec requirements, or display hardware.
